Certified Sorted Apprenticeship Seminar

Certified Sorted Apprenticeship Seminar

We began our learning process in the classroom, being taught by Robyn Kuhl and Carrie Hull, who have been educational pioneers and created the Certified Sorted method.  Alpaca fiber produces significantly higher quality products when it is properly graded and sorted and then used for the appropriate use by grade.  One of the problems with getting the fiber sorted and graded has been the shortage of trained graders and the need for a very consistent and accurate method of sorting and grading.  Robyn and Carrie used their combined experience and knowledge of fiber and business to learn these skills, create standard methods for the process and then established a training method in order to increase the number of North American fiber sorters and graders.

The History of Harrisville

The History of Harrisville

Chick, who is a third generation owner of the mill, gave us a delightful history of Harrisville and its mill and then a personal tour of many of the buildings.

This beautiful brick building was the first mill and has been restored for a teaching facility and store.  It was powered by the river flowing under it.

It can get quite dusty with lots of fleece flying - masks are a good idea.

Tour the Farm

Virtual Tour

We bought our farm in 1999 and set about rehabilitating it for us and our horses.  When we decided to raise alpacas, the design of some of our rehab plans changed.  We also changed the way we managed the soil and how we harvested our hay.  It has been an adventure!
